About PrintCalc
PrintCalc is a free collection of 3D printing calculators built for makers, engineers, hobbyists, and small-batch manufacturers. Whether you're estimating filament usage, planning storage for a long project, calculating your true cost per print, or comparing the ROI of a new printer, our tools give you instant, accurate results — no sign-up or subscription required.
Our Mission
3D printing math is deceptively complicated. The relationship between filament weight, spool density, print volume, layer height, infill percentage, and cost involves several interdependent variables that most slicers present as individual numbers without helping you see the full picture. PrintCalc's mission is to make that math transparent and easy: enter your settings, see the real numbers.
We designed each calculator to reflect how makers actually think about their prints — starting from slicer output (estimated grams or meters of filament) and working backward to cost, time, and material planning. Every formula is based on standard industry conventions.
What We Offer
- Filament Usage Calculator: Convert between filament length (meters), weight (grams), and volume (cm³) for any material density. Supports PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, Nylon, and custom densities.
- Print Cost Calculator: Calculate the true cost per print including filament material cost, electricity consumption (watts × hours), and machine amortization. Understand your break-even point on any project.
- Print Time Estimator: Estimate print duration from layer count, layer height, print speed, and travel moves. Useful for scheduling print queues and overnight runs.
- Layer Height Optimizer: Find the optimal layer height for your printer's Z-axis step distance to avoid rounding artifacts and banding.
- Infill Calculator: Understand how infill percentage affects weight, strength, and material consumption at different patterns (grid, gyroid, honeycomb).
- Printer ROI Calculator: Calculate how many prints you need to break even on a new printer purchase versus outsourcing to a print service at market rates.
- Batch Print Planner: Estimate total filament and time for multi-part or high-volume print runs.
Who Uses PrintCalc?
- Hobbyists: Understanding material costs and estimating how much filament a complex model will use before starting a long print.
- Small businesses: Pricing custom prints accurately by knowing true cost including electricity, machine time, and material.
- Engineers and prototypers: Planning material procurement for iterative design cycles.
- Makerspaces: Calculating per-member or per-project cost allocations for shared printers.
How Our Calculators Work
All calculations run entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server, and results appear instantly. Filament calculations use standard material density values (PLA: 1.24 g/cm³, PETG: 1.27 g/cm³, ABS: 1.04 g/cm³) with an option to enter custom density for specialty filaments. Electricity cost uses your input wattage and local rate per kWh.
